The little bookstore that's bigger on the inside

It’s that time again. Check out what’s new on the shelves of ABSW!

19book "The Girls of Atomic City" by Denise Kiernan.

If you’re a history buff you’ll want to check out Denise Kiernan’s new book The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II. Drawing on the voices of the women who lived it, now in their eighties and nineties, Kiernan’s  new book tells the story of Oak Ridge, Tennessee – a town home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City, and which did not exist as far as most of the world was concerned. The story tells how thousands of citizens were enticed to join this city of secrets with promises of steady wages and war-ending work, but few would ever even guess the truth behind the tasks they were given every day — until the end of the war, when Oak Ridge’s secret was revealed.

Maybe you’re more interested in what happens with key cases that end up in the Supreme Court? Said by some to be the best Supreme Court book in years, Marcia Coyle’s book The Roberts Court gives a brilliant inside account of how key cases (concerning health care, money in elections, guns at home, and race in schools) all began, the personalities and conflicts that sent them careening onto the national scene, and how they eventually exposed the great divides among the justices. Marcia Coyle’s book offers a “court side” seat to witness the struggle which comes along with laying down the law of the land.

Don’t forget to grab something for the kids! Tim Federle’s book Better Nate Than Ever is targeted for ages 9-13, and is great for anyone with a love of show-tunes. Young Nate Foster has some BIG broadway dreams, but how is he supposed to pursue them when he’s stuck in Jankburg, Pennsylvania where no-one appreciates a good sing-and-dance number. Then the chance of a lifetime comes, with help from his best friend Libby; the two plan a daring overnight trip for Nate to go to the Big Apple and audition for E.T. – the musical! This could be his only chance at big-time stardom, but is the excitement worth the chance of missing that last bus home before anyone notices he’s gone?
