Annie’s Book Stop of Worcester on 65 James Street welcomes New England Horror Author Alyn Day to our Author Spotlight this Friday. Alyn Day is a member of the New England Horror Writers and a horror enthusiast. Her short stories have been featured in an number of anthologies and projects, including So Long and Thanks for All the Brains, Here Be Clowns, Horror on the Installment Plan, Quick Bites of Flesh, Let’s Scare Cancer to Death, Phobias, and Brian Keene’s Operation Ice Bat. Alyn was unable to make our “All Your Fears in One Basket” event, but we’re happy to show her awesomeness on the blog!
Thanks for stopping by, Alyn. Can you please tell us briefly a little about yourself and your writing? How would you like us to introduce you?
I’m Alyn Day, aka z0mbiegrl. I typically write about (you guessed it!) zombies. Lately, I’ve been trying to break out of that mold and write about other things. My current work in progress is about aliens, which is completely new territory for me. In a nutshell, I’m a tech nerd who loves zombies and horror in general.
Where can people find your work? (Besides ABSW ;)–though they should totally check here first!)
My blog is the best source, http://alyndayofthedead.blogspot.com/
How can we follow your work, share your awesomeness, or otherwise stalk you in a totally non-creepy way?
The above mentioned blog, twitter (@z0mbiegrl) or Facebook (also z0mbiegrl).
What character did you love or hate the most while writing? And why?
The protagonist from my short story, 78154. Writing her was tough because she was very much the opposite of me. She made a series of bad decisions that didn’t turn out very well for her. I’d like to think I’d do better if faced with a similar situation.
What piece of advice would you want to share with other writers?
Write, write, write! No excuses. Can’t find the time? Make the time! Sit down, turn off the TV or the cell phone, and just put words on paper, no matter how good they may or may not be. You’ll never accomplish anything if you don’t begin.
What is/are your passions when you’re not writing? How do you make time for your non-writing hobbies/things you love?
I love to cook and play video games. The cooking part is easy – everyone has to eat! Sometimes I invite people over just for the excuse to make food for them. Other times, I find reasons to bake or cook (It’s cold out! How about some stew?), and if all else fails, I’ll make cupcakes or cookies and bring them in to work. I try to get in at least a quick rift run (Diablo 3) with my fiancé and/or our friends at least a few times a week. It’s great bonding time and stress relief!
What is one thing that most people don’t realize about you?
I’m really pretty shy and goofy in person. I’m not at all dark and gloomy or as outgoing as I sometimes appear.
Are there any groups, clubs, or organizations that you would recommend to other writers that have helped you in your career?
The NEHW (New England Horror Writers) have been incredibly helpful! They’re a great group of people and their newsletter is always useful.
Thank you, again, Alyn, for sharing your time on the ABSW Author Spotlight Blog!
