Welcome to Bookstore Mapping. Bookstore Mapping is our way of taking you around the store, and introducing you, our readers, to the array of authors we have on our shelves. This week’s Bookstore Mapping blog starts with “A”, and begins in the Adventure section.
This is not only because Adventure begins with an “A”, it is because we are starting at the back of our store, where our Adventure books are located, and moving from back to front. And since this is a new beginning, we are starting with all authors whose names begin with the letter “A”, and working forwards toward the letter “Z” when introducing our authors. Now, without further ado, we present to you our list of ADVENTURE “A” Authors. All you need to do is to click on the link, and you will find some valuable information about the people as writers, and as members of society.
Edward S. Aarons: (1916 – 1975)
He was born in 1916, and he authored more than 80 novels from 1936 to 1975, some of them under pseudonyms. He was most known worldwide for a series of international spy thrillers, particularly his Assignment series starring CIA agent Sam Durell.
John Abbot: (October 15, 1926 – July 06, 2005)
John Abbot, the Author of Scimitar, was actually the very prolific writer of crime fiction, Ed McBain. He also wrote under many other pseudonyms: Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Ezra Hannon, Dean Hudson, Evan Hunter, and Richard Marsten.
Jerry Ahern (June 23, 1946 – July 24, 2012)
Jerry Ahern was an American SF and Action Novel writer. He also wrote several non -fiction books, and articles for firearms publications. He was considered a firearms expert, and worked in the firearms field.
He is best known for his post apocalyptic survivalist series, The Survivor. In it he uses his firearms background to describe weapons of a war being waged to survive, and centers around the attempts of an ex-CIA agent to preserve his family.
Buzz Aldrin is an American engineer and former astronaut. As the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11, he was one of the first two humans to land on the Moon, and the second person to walk on it. He co-wrote a novel based on some of his experiences, and what might happen in future space explorations.
Ted Allbeury (October 24, 1917 – December 4, 2005)
Ted Allbeury was a British author of espionage fiction. He was well qualified to write about espionage work, as he served as an intelligence officer in the Special Operations Executive between 1940 and 1947, becoming a lieutenant colonel. He was a secret agent in Nazi Germany during the war, and in later years, during the cold war he was captured and tortured when running agents across the border between East and West Germany. After getting out of the service, he was involved with radio, after which he published his first book in 1972. He went on to publish over 40 novels.
Steve Alten (born August 21, 1959 -)
Steve Alten is most famous for his action-packed and very visual SF thrillers, including his MEG series of books, which became best-sellers in many countries. His novels have all been given rave reviews, and several of them have been optioned to film producers. One of them, Goliath, is even being considered for a TV series. He is very reader-oriented, and encourages his students to read by his writing “exciting, page turning thrillers”, and by remaining accessible to his readers.
Eric Ambler (28 June 1909 – 22 October 1998)
Eric Ambler was known as a British writer of spy novels and a screenwriter. He was very influential, and is generally credited with having raised the thriller to the level of literature. He brought substance to the genre at a time when it lacked maturity and literary skill. His most well known works were The Mask of Dimitrios (1939) (published in the US under the title A Coffin for Dimitrios), which was made into a film in 1944, and The Light of Day (1962), filmed in 1964 as Topkapi. He was an anti-fascist, and joined the army in WW2, leaving it as a Lieutenant Colonel, giving him a good background for international intrigue and film.
Angery American (AK.A. Chris Weatherman) is the author of the Survivalist series of books, which have twice been listed on the USA Today best sellers list. He has written eleven published works, and apparently is still going strong. Chris has been involved with Prepping since the 90’s, and uses his knowledge of primitive and modern survival skills with the right equipment to enhance his books with information.
Jeffrey Anderson, M.D.
Jeffrey Anderson, M.D. completed his residency and fellowship from the University of Utah in neuroradiology, and he now runs the Brain Network Laboratory there, as Director of Functional Imaging. He has written two national bestselling science thrillers.
Jeffrey Archer (born 15 April 1940)
You might say that Jeffrey Archer has done a lot in his lifetime so far: He was a member of Parliament when he was 29, was over 427,000 British Pounds in debt, resigned from Parliament and started to write his first novel when he was 34. He has written novels, short stories, and non-fiction, all of which were number one best sellers. He has been published in 97 countries and over 33 languages, and has sold over 330 million copies of his books worldwide. He is also a playwright and politician (he ran for Mayor of London, but withdrew his candidacy when he was charged with perjury and a few other things. He ended up in jail for 2 years, and was released in 2003.)
