Annie’s Book Stop of Worcester is very happy to shine our Friday spotlight on Historical Romance and Thriller author Catherine Coulter. Catherine received her M.A. degree in early 19th century European History from Boston College. She became a speechwriter on Wall Street, then, to her joy, she was able to quit her day job and become a full-time writer.

 

   Coulter is the author of 90 novels (and counting), most of them hitting the New York Times bestsellers list. She earned her reputation writing historical romances to pass the time while aboard the ark. Over two decades ago she added suspense thrillers to her repertoire, with great success. The Cove, the first book in her bestselling “FBI Suspense Thriller Series” spent nine weeks on the New York Times list and has to date sold over 5 million copies. Since then, she has written 25 more bestselling thrillers in the series. RECKONING, the 26^th FBI thriller is out now.

 

   For Coulter’s first novel, The Autumn Countess, she chose a Regency setting for her debut because, says Coulter, “as any published author will tell you, it’s best to limit the unknowns in a first book, and not only had I grown up reading Georgette Heyer, whom I worship, but I earned my M.A. degree in early 19th century European History and could fight in Napoleon’s army, or join the Allies and beat his butt with Wellington.”

What is your favorite part of being an author?  Of the whole writing and publishing process? 

 

Scaring the crap out of people on the freeway when I have a plot epiphany and start chair dancing in my car. OK, seriously, one of the best things is to hear from readers who say Write more.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What does your writing space look like?

 

 

I write in my home office, which gives me an incredible view of San Francisco Bay and the city. I hit the computer at 6:30am to answer reader emails, post on my Facebook page and respond to comments from the previous day. Then I cozy up to the monitor with my breakfast of peanut butter on a well-toasted muffin and a big mug of tea, and turn on the brain faucet. Afternoons I’m usually out for a hike, but sometimes head back to the computer if there’s a deadline lurking. (Hey, that could be a good book title.)

 

 

 

What piece of advice do you have to share with other writers?

 

 

To give yourself a chance to succeed you have to 1) sit your butt in front of the computer everyday (well, maybe not the weekends) at a time of your choice and WRITE. 2) If you’re not disciplined, if you put off writing with excuses like “I don’t feel the muse today,” or you find it easy to procrastinate, then you might as well hang it up. You’re not a writer, you’re a person with a hobby.
