Annie's Book Stop of Worcester

The little bookstore that's bigger on the inside

Hello, folks. This week we have a variety of books in different genres, but the books of note are really the non-fiction books. Each non-fiction book brings out a different aspect of life. For example, we have a cookbook by Christopher Kimball for those interested in the culinary arts. Speaking of art, Kevin Nealon’s book, I Exaggerate: My Brushes with Fame is a book that not only has personal essays, but it includes caricatures of his famous friends that he drew.  Inside Bridgerton gives those audio-visual (TV/Movie) lovers a chance to get behind-the-scenes looks at a wonderful TV series made from an even more wonderful series of novels (In my opinion). Then of course, we have the memoirs and biographies, one, a look at a contemporary Music Icon, and the other, a well-deserved tribute to a founding father.

The descriptions of all these books, and the fiction books are below. I hope you will find some of them to your liking!

NON-FICTION:

COOKBOOK:

MILK STREET: COOK WHAT YOU HAVE by Christopher Kimball

Make a meal out of almost anything.

Stop shopping and start cooking what you have. Your pantry’s possibilities are endless. Milk Street will help you transform whatever you already have into bright, bold meals from around the world.

Got a can of chickpeas? It can become anything from a quick hummus to a curry spiked with sweet carrots, from a garlicky chickpea soup to a bowl of crispy canned beans with lemon and scallions.

Or grab that can of tomatoes from the back of the cabinet. It can become spicy one-pot pasta all’arrabbiata, chilaquiles rojos, a rich shakshuka with poached eggs or a chicken and tortilla soup.

Turn to the refrigerator, where eggs and leftover vegetables are the start of cheesy migas, a Spanish tortilla with potato chips or a quick fried rice. Chicken breasts or thighs from the freezer become Hungarian chicken paprikash or hearty chicken salad with green tahini. Cooks in Amalfi, Italy, taught us to turn a wedge of Parmesan and lemons on the counter into a light yet flavorful pesto. And that’s just the start. Desserts, too, come together easily with ingredients everyone keeps on hand.

These 225 recipes begin with the most common ingredients in your kitchen, but they provide more than a lesson in practicality. They teach an improvisational, creative way to cook.

That’s when cooking becomes an adventure.

BIOGRAPHY:

REVOLUTIONARY: SAMUEL ADAMS by Stacy Schiff

A revelatory biography from a Pulitzer Prize-winner about the most essential Founding Father— the one who stood behind the change in thinking that produced the American Revolution.

Thomas Jefferson asserted that if there was any leader of the Revolution, “Samuel Adams was the man.” With high-minded ideals and bare-knuckle tactics, Adams led what could be called the greatest campaign of civil resistance in American history.

Stacy Schiff returns Adams to his seat of glory, introducing us to the shrewd and eloquent man who supplied the moral backbone of the American Revolution. A singular figure at a singular moment, Adams amplified the Boston Massacre. He helped to mastermind the Boston Tea Party. He employed every tool available to rally a town, a colony, and eventually a band of colonies behind him, creating the cause that created a country. For his efforts he became the most wanted man in America: When Paul Revere rode to Lexington in 1775, it was to warn Samuel Adams that he was about to be arrested for treason.

In The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams, Schiff brings her masterful skills to Adams’s improbable life, illuminating his transformation from aimless son of a well-off family to tireless, beguiling radical who mobilized the colonies. Arresting, original, and deliriously dramatic, this is a long-overdue chapter in the history of our nation.

FICTION:

THE PASSENGER by Cormac McCarthy

The best-selling, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Road returns with the first of a two-volume masterpiece: The Passenger is the story of a salvage diver, haunted by loss, afraid of the watery deep, pursued for a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longing for a death he cannot reconcile with God.

Look for Stella Maris, the second volume in The Passenger series, on sale December 6th, 2022

1980, PASS CHRISTIAN, MISSISSIPPI: It is three in the morning when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wet suit and plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the crash site are the pilot’s flight bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. But how? A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Traversing the American South, from the garrulous barrooms of New Orleans to an abandoned oil rig off the Florida coast, The Passenger is a breathtaking novel of morality and science, the legacy of sin, and the madness that is human consciousness.
