Annie's Book Stop of Worcester

The little bookstore that's bigger on the inside

Hello, folks. There is a great assortment of books this week, starting with a genre we don’t get often enough, poetry. And Yet: Poems by Kate Baer’s poetry delves into very emotional subjects, and if you like poetry she is being compared to Dorianne Laux, Mary Oliver, Maggie Nelson, and other great female poets of our time.

Next, we have the thrillers, all part of book series. They are: Clive Cussler The Sea Wolves by Jack Du Brul, part of the Isaac Bell series, and Desert Star, a Harry Bosch novel by Michael Connelly.

Another series is actually considered fiction, Dawnlands by Phillippa Gregory, part of the Fairmile series. It is actually Historical fiction, since it deals with intrigue and political upheaval in 17th-century England. The next fiction book is Now is Not the Time to Panic, by Kevin Wilson, a Coming-of-Age story. The third fiction book is Galatea: A Short Story by Madeline Miller, a retelling of the Pygmalion story.

Yet another book in a series comes in a different genre, romantic suspense. The book is called Lightning in A Mirror by Jayne Ann Krentz, and it is the final installment in the Fogg Lake series.

There are a number of cookbooks that have arrived this week, but I thought I would highlight one that struck my taste buds:  What’s for Dessert: Simple Recipes for Dessert People by Claire Saffitz.  If you are a desert fan, this book is for you.

Thrillers:

CLIVE CUSSLER THE SEA WOLVES by Jack Du Brul

Series Overview: Isaac Bell is an electrifying new hero: a tall, lean, no-nonsense detective working for the Van Dorn Detective Agency. Driven by a sense of justice, he travels early-twentieth-century America pursuing thieves and killers and sometimes criminals much worse.

Detective Isaac Bell battles foreign spies, German U-boats, and an old nemesis to capture a secret technology that could alter the outcome of World War I in the latest adventure in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Clive Cussler.

As New England swelters in the summer of 1914, Detective Isaac Bell is asked to investigate a cache of missing rifles—only to discover something much more sinister. Whoever broke into this Winchester Factory wasn’t looking to take weapons, they wanted to leave something in the shipping crates: a radio transmitter, set to summon a fleet of dreaded German U-boats. Someone is trying to keep American supplies from reaching British shores, and if Bell doesn’t crack the conspiracy in time, the Atlantic Ocean will run red with blood.

Bell must hunt down a new piece of technology that is allowing the Germans to rule the seas from New York to England. With the outcome of the war at stake and Franklin Roosevelt’s orders on the line, Bell will risk everything to stop the U-Boats before they strike again.

DESERT STAR (HARRY BOSCH SERIES) by Michael Connelly

LAPD detective Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch work together to hunt the killer who is Bosch’s “white whale”—a man responsible for the murder of an entire family.

A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. Yet, after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him but that he hasn’t been able to crack—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come work with her as a volunteer investigator in the new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his “white whale” with the resources of the LAPD behind him.

The two must put aside old resentments to work together again and close in on a dangerous killer. Propulsive and unstoppable, this new novel demonstrates once again why “Connelly is the real deal” (Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review).

Fiction:

DAWNLANDS: A NOVEL by Phillippa Gregory

The “superb” (People) Fairmile series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory continues as the fiercely independent Alinor and her family find themselves entangled in palace intrigue and political upheaval in 17th-century England.

It is 1685 and England is on the brink of a renewed civil war. King Charles II has died without an heir and his brother James is to take the throne. But the people are bitterly divided, and many do not welcome the new king or his young queen. Ned Ferryman cannot persuade his sister, Alinor, that he is right to return from America with his Pokanoket servant, Rowan, to join the rebel army. Instead, Alinor and her daughter Alys, have been coaxed by the manipulative Livia to save the queen from the coming siege. The rewards are life-changing: the family could return to their beloved Tidelands, and Alinor could rule where she was once lower than a servant.

Alinor’s son is determined to stay clear of the war, but, in order to keep his own secrets in the past, Livia traps him in a plan to create an imposter Prince of Wales—a surrogate baby to the queen.

From the last battle in the desolate Somerset Levels to the hidden caves on the slave island of Barbados, this third volume of an epic story follows a family from one end of the empire to another, to find a new dawn in a world which is opening up before them with greater rewards and dangers than ever before.

NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO PANIC: A NOVEL by Kevin Wilson

From the New York Times bestselling author of Nothing to See Here comes an exuberant, big-hearted novel about two teenaged misfits who spectacularly collide one fateful summer, and the art they make that changes their lives forever.

Sixteen-year-old Frankie Budge—aspiring writer, indifferent student, offbeat loner—is determined to make it through yet another sad summer in Coalfield, Tennessee, when she meets Zeke, a talented artist who has just moved into his grandmother’s unhappy house and who is as lonely and awkward as Frankie is. Romantic and creative sparks begin to fly, and when the two jointly make an unsigned poster, shot through with an enigmatic phrase, it becomes unforgettable to anyone who sees it. The edge is a shantytown filled with gold seekers. We are fugitives, and the law is skinny with hunger for us.

The posters begin appearing everywhere, and people wonder who is behind them. Satanists, kidnappers—the rumors won’t stop, and soon the mystery has dangerous repercussions that spread far beyond the town. The art that brought Frankie and Zeke together now threatens to tear them apart.

Twenty years later, Frances Eleanor Budge—famous author, mom to a wonderful daughter, wife to a loving husband—gets a call that threatens to upend everything: a journalist named Mazzy Brower is writing a story about the Coalfield Panic of 1996. Might Frances know something about that? And will what she knows destroy the life she’s so carefully built?

A bold coming-of-age story, written with Kevin Wilson’s trademark wit and blazing prose, Now Is Not the Time to Panic is a nuanced exploration of young love, identity, and the power of art. It’s also about the secrets that haunt us—and, ultimately, what the truth will set free.
